The Pressures At Drybrook Surgery ( posted on Sep 4, 2017 )

Dear Patient,

We are taking this opportunity to ask for your support and patience during a very challenging time for this Practice, Primary Care and the NHS in general.

Our Challenges

Nationally, recruiting GPs is very difficult and Gloucestershire is no exception. Since the retirement of Dr Good we have been advertising for a new GP to join our team. Dr Harp joined us for a short time but we are now back to only two GPs serving the same patient population that had previously been served by three. We are currently filling the gaps, as best we can, with locum GPs.

Whilst our locums are very experienced and hard-working they only work limited hours and cannot take on the work of a full-time partner. In addition to the shortage of GP appointments we have seen an increase in patients wanting to see a GP.

What we are doing

In order to help provide more appointments we have appointed an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Emma is a highly skilled clinician. She has allowed us to increase the amount of triage that we offer each week to supplement the usual Monday triage session provided by Karen Carpenter. She can deal with most problems without reference to a GP but if required can refer a patient to one of our GPs.

We are continuing to make efforts to find a permanent replacement to Dr Good but the shortage of GPs wanting to make a career in General Practice is making this difficult.

We are also working with other practices locally to find ways to work cooperatively to deliver improved services to patients.

We have a clinical pharmacist working in the Practice. Though Wendy is only here half a day a week she is able to deal with many of the medication issues that our GPs would previously have managed. This frees up time for the GPs to do other work.

How can you be of help?

We know that you are waiting longer for appointments at the Practice, and we know how frustrating this is. In the present circumstances we are unable to provide the type of service we would like, so we are asking two things of you to help us. Firstly, please consider whether you can manage your health in other ways. Your local pharmacist can often advise on medication for managing many common ailments. You can also use ASAP www.asapglos.nhs.uk this is a Gloucestershire based service that provides advice on managing many common conditions. Secondly that you please be patient with us, and our staff if we can’t always give you everything you need at the time you need it. We are doing our very best.

Online access mobile phone app ( posted on Aug 10, 2017 )

It is now possible to access on-line services using a mobile phone app. If you regularly order repeat medications or book appointments it may be more convenient to do this from your mobile phone. If you already have an online account go to On-line access for patients (left-hand menu) and Get the app. If you don't yet have an online account call in to the surgery and complete a form (you may need to provide photo ID).
